Senior Hogan Aides Taking New Jobs in Administration

At the end of a grueling and contentious four-hour Board of Public Works meeting Wednesday, Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) stopped briefly to pay tribute to Mark Newgent, a deputy policy director in the governor’s office and Hogan’s liaison to the BPW. Newgent is moving on to become procurement director at the Maryland Department of Transportation.

“I look forward to bringing him up to this podium and grilling him,” Hogan joked.

Newgent is a longstanding Hogan lieutenant, dating back to the days when the governor launched Change Maryland, to critique O’Malley administration policies. He is also a co-founder of Red Maryland, the provocative conservative website.

But he’s also a policy wonk, having worked for medical journals and research organizations.

Newgent’s replacement as Hogan’s liaison to the Board of Public Works will be Valerie Radomsky, who had been serving for the past 10 months as director of the Office of Educational Accountability in the Governor’s Office for Children – a position Hogan established after the legislature would not create a permanent accountability office.

This represents a homecoming of sorts for Radomsky: During her three years as education policy adviser to Comptroller Peter V.R. Franchot (D), she also served as Franchot’s BPW coordinator.

Radomsky’s deputy, Barbara Krupiarz, will be running the governor’s educational accountability office at least temporarily.

“We’re in the process of finding a replacement,” Hogan spokeswoman Shareese Churchill said.
