Hogan Taps Alumnus of Paul Ryan’s Shop to be New Communications Director

Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) is bringing on a former top aide to ex-U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to become his communications director.

Hogan will announce Friday that Michael Ricci, who was Ryan’s communications director from 2015-2019, is taking the job.

Ricci brings more than 15 years of experience in marketing and communications to the governor’s office. Before working for Ryan, where he led a 10-person communications team, Ricci served as deputy communications director and chief speechwriter for prior House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), and held several additional communications positions for members of Congress.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome Mike to our team, and I know his experience and perspective will add value to our administration from day one as we work to effectively communicate our priorities to the people of Maryland,” Hogan said in a statement.

“I am delighted to be joining Governor Hogan’s first-rate team at such an important moment,” Ricci said. “The job every day is to amplify the governor’s agenda, and tell the story of how Maryland is changing for the better.”

A Montgomery County resident, Ricci holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Political Science from Columbia University.

Ricci’s appointment is effective Tuesday. He will replace Amelia Chassé, who will leave the administration later this month to take a senior communications position with the Republican Governors Association.
