Ex-Delegate’s Treasurer Accused of Stealing Campaign Funds

State Prosecutor Emmit C. Davitt announced Tuesday that the former campaign treasurer of the late Del. Joseph J. “Sonny” Minnick (D-Baltimore County) has been indicted for allegedly stealing campaign funds.

Ronald Chesek, 59, of Severna Park, was charged in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court with stealing more than $13,000 from The Friends of Joseph J. Minnick campaign account between 2013 and 2017.

Minnick represented the Dundalk-based 6th District in the House of Delegates from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1995 to 2015, and died in 2015 at the age of 82, half a year after leaving office. According to Davitt’s office, Chesek served as Minnick’s campaign treasurer from 1993 to 2017.

Chesek, the state prosecutor’s office alleges, wrote himself checks totaling $13,045 for his own personal use. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $15,000.
