Six Democratic members of Maryland’s congressional delegation will have lunch together in Baltimore on Wednesday afternoon, along with Rep.-elect David J. Trone (D), who was just elected to represent the 6th District. The lawmakers are referring to it as a “working lunch.”
Among those expected to be in attendance at the Rye Street Tavern in the Port Covington neighborhood: U.S. Sens. Benjamin L. Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, and Reps. Elijah E. Cummings, Jamie Raskin, C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger and John P. Sarbanes.
“Now that the election is behind us, it is time to govern,” Cardin said in a statement. “Team Maryland is ready to roll up our sleeves and keep fighting for Marylanders’ health care, jobs and the safety and security of all our communities. We are proud to welcome our newest member and we look forward to a productive Congress ahead.”
The House members will be celebrating their ascendance into the majority come January. Cummings is expected to become chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which will take a leading role in overseeing the Trump administration.
Although Trone will be a freshman, his long history as a powerhouse Democratic donor may elevate his status within the caucus compared to other incoming members.
