Group Affiliated With Dem Governors Finally on the Air for Jealous

Almost three months after the Republican Governors Association began overwhelming Maryland Democratic gubernatorial nominee Benjamin T. Jealous with an avalanche of attack ads, a group affiliated with the Democratic Governors Association is finally up on the air with a TV spot.

The independent expenditure from the group Democratic Action, part of a “significant six-figure buy,” according to the DGA, focuses on the education record of Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R). It comes on the first day of early voting in Maryland.

“Parents and teachers know the real story on Larry Hogan and our schools,” the narrator says in the 30-second spot. “The fact is, many public schools have slipped, some even in crisis. And Governor Hogan cut $68 million we should be investing directly on our local schools. Let’s get Maryland back to basics. Ben Jealous, the only candidate backed by classroom teachers for his commitment to fully funding education. Ben Jealous, the education governor Maryland needs.”

The RGA has already spent more than $2 million in Maryland, and its ads started airing almost immediately after the late June primary.

Meanwhile, the Hogan campaign on Thursday launched a three-minute video called “GOTV,” which features excerpts of the speech and Gaithersburg’s Democratic mayor, Jud Ashman, gave at a campaign rally earlier this week.
