Some News About Maryland Matters

Danielle E. Gaines

Maryland Matters is very happy to announce that Danielle Gaines, a stellar government and politics reporter, will be joining our staff next week. Danielle worked most recently for Bethesda Beat, cranking out several stories a day for a midday email on Montgomery County affairs. Previously, she spent six years at the Frederick News-Post – as the paper’s principal government and politics reporter for half that time, covering courts and legal affairs before that.  Danielle also reported for the now-defunct Gazette of Politics and Business in Maryland, and previously worked as a county government and education reporter at the Merced Sun-Star in California’s Central Valley.  Danielle Gaines Danielle has an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University and a B.A. in Political Science and Psychology from the University of Illinois, where she was an editor and reporter at The Daily Illini newspaper. Additionally, we’re pleased to report that Angela Breck, our associate editor, is taking on more responsibilities at Maryland Matters and will become managing editor. Angela is a skilled journalist who is a former editor of the Maryland Independent in Charles County. While we’re thrilled to have Danielle come on board and grateful that Angela is taking on more duties, the news for us is bittersweet, because we are losing the full-time services of the legendary William F. Zorzi, who we lured out of a long hiatus from journalism to help us cover the 2018 General Assembly session and primary season. The good news is, Bill is not leaving us entirely. He’s got a few stories he’s finishing up – which you will not want to miss, by the way. And as he returns to a full-time television writing project, he will retain “senior status” at Maryland Matters – and like a judge with senior status who hears cases from time to time, he’ll continue to contribute items for us every now and then. So thank you, Bill, for lending us your credibility, wisdom and unique voice. Thanks for all you do, Angela. And welcome, Danielle! And to our readers, thank you for sticking with us as we progress on our journey. We couldn’t do it without you! Stay tuned for more news about changes and upgrades at Maryland Matters very soon! — Josh Kurtz
