Recount Seals Walsh Win by 6 Votes in Howard District 1 Council Race

Elizabeth M. “Liz” Walsh sealed her upset win in the Democratic primary for the Howard County Council on Wednesday, after a recount increased her margin of victory from 2 to 6 votes over incumbent District 1 Councilman Jonathan S. “Jon” Weinstein.
Walsh, 47, a political newcomer, won the nomination for the council seat over Weinstein 3,175 to 3,169 in the Howard County Board of Elections recount.
Weinstein, 50, was first elected in 2014 to represent District 1, which consists mostly of the northeastern section of Howard County.
“The election and recount process worked as designed, to count and confirm every vote, and the results show that I did not prevail in the primary,” Weinstein said in a statement. “I have called Liz Walsh to offer my congratulations on her primary win.”
Walsh will face Republican nominee Rajneesh “Raj” Kathuria, 52, in the Nov. 6 general election. [email protected]
