Glendening Endorses Baker for Governor

The Chesapeake Bay is a national treasure. It is the heart of Maryland’s identity. We need a leader who will step up and protect the Bay and all of our State’s great natural resources.

Rushern Baker is a visionary leader committed to protecting the Bay and our environment while also moving our economy forward with bold, innovative action. Rushern knows that Maryland’s green future is not just about protecting our environment but also about maximizing economic development and creating jobs across the state.

Maryland can be a national leader in clean energy production and a center for alternate energy research and technology. Our capacity for solar and wind energy generation combined with Maryland’s great research institutions can make us a national environmental leader with a growing “green economy.”

Through Rushern’s leadership as county executive, Prince George’s County is leading the State in recycling, composting and emerging as a solar energy leader. His greening of Prince George’s storm water management is a recognized national model. Earlier today, Rushern announced his “Greenprint for Maryland,” a comprehensive and innovative approach to make Maryland a leader in energy efficiency and clean energy jobs, move Maryland away from fossil fuels, and implement smart growth practices to build resilient communities and restore the Chesapeake Bay.

The national government is increasingly abandoning its commitment to clear air, clean water and a healthy environment. Putting science aside it refuses to acknowledge the reality and danger of climate change. Now more than ever, we need courageous leadership to resist those changes and to work with surrounding states to protect Marylanders’ right to breath fresh air and drink and swim in clean water.

As governor in 1997 I started the first in the nation statewide Smart Growth program. I am pleased that it has now become a national – and international – model for protection of open space and forest and agricultural land by investing in our existing communities and supporting mass transit, sustainable, walkable communities and meeting the challenges of Climate Change. As a state legislator and now as county executive, Rushern has consistently been a strong proponent of Smart Growth.

As former governor of Maryland, 12-year Prince George’s County Executive and a strong environmental advocate I know what it takes to lead this state to continue our national environmental leadership and at the same time to create a strong shared prosperity economy. I know that Rushern understands this. I have seen him implement these strategies in Prince George’s County. I am confident he will do it for Maryland. That is why I strongly support Rushern Baker to be the Democratic nominee for governor of Maryland.
