Melony Griffith Forms Ticket With Dels. Davis and Barnes in Prince George’s

Former Del. Melony Griffith (D), who is running to replace state Sen. Ulysses Currie (D) in Prince George’s County’s 25th District, is teaming up with two of the three delegates in the district along with an Air Force veteran and military contractor who ran for a House seat in 2014.

Griffith, House Economic Matters Chairman Dereck Davis (D), Del. Darryl Barnes (D) and consultant Nick Charles (D) traveled to the State Board of Elections in Annapolis Tuesday to file their candidate papers and announce that they are running together as a team.

Former Del. Melony Griffith, who is running for state Senate, signs candidate papers with her running mates (left to right): Del. Dereck Davis, Del. Darryl Barnes and Nick Charles.

“We will work together to make sure District 25 and Prince George’s County get the resources and services we deserve,” the candidates said in a statement, adding that they are calling their joint campaign effort “The 25th District Leadership Team.”

With Currie retiring after serving 24 years in the Senate, Griffith, who unsuccessfully challenged him in the 2014 Democratic primary after serving 16 years in the House, has emerged as the establishment favorite to replace him. She is running alongside Davis, who has served in the House since 1995 and has been a powerful committee chairman since 2003, and Barnes, who was elected in 2014.

Charles finished fifth in the crowded District 25 House primary in 2014.

But even though the ticket they have assembled is formidable, their election is not a foregone conclusion. It is looking increasingly likely that the third delegate in the district, Angela Angel, will also seek Currie’s Senate seat. Jonathan Rosero, a veterinarian, is also running for the Senate seat.

At least three younger Democrats are seeking House seats in the 25th District: attorney Wala Blegay, Bernard Holloway, a former student member of the Prince George’s County Board of Education, and Kent Roberson, who works for a Washington, D.C., lobbying firm.

Will Angel, assuming she runs for Senate, decide to slate with the three House candidates shut out by Griffith et al? It’s Prince George’s County, so anything’s possible. Stay tuned.
